Remote Office Tools

Working from home and different remote offices around the world I've learned a lot. I've also used a lot of different tools to stay connected on the road and from my home office. On this page I'm going to list the tools I use to make my home and remote office work.

It's been awhile since I originally created this page and just updated it for 2026! Amazing the tools in the past I no longer use like Skype and Teamviewer. Good at the time and probably still valuable, but not something I'm currently using and can recommend.

Drawing, Screen Capture and Video:

Camtasia – software I use to record and capture screens on my computer – screen casting. Very useful if you are also explaining how to do something in a software package. You can also use this software to make and edit videos.

Canva – the tool I use to create and design graphics for my websites and social media accounts like Pinterest. Easy to use with a lot of functionality.

Lucidchart – the one tool you need to create diagrams for your reports, presentation and online. I use it mostly to create network diagrams. But you can use it to create: flow charts, mind maps, process documents, smart phone mock ups, and many more…

Snagit – the one tool I use for screen capture on my Windows PC and Mac Book Pro. Then I can save the image and share it in documents and emails. Great if you are writing user documents and want to includes images.

Getting Connected:

Surfshark – VPN software. This is the VPN software I use when I want to connect home when I'm traveling or want to access a show in a country I don't have access to.

Working Your Home Office:

Dreamhost – I've been using Dreamhost to host various website for myself, friends and clients over 15 years. Wow! Has the Internet been around that long? Great support, 1-click installers and no problems.

namecheap – Who I trust to buy and manage my domains for all the websites I work on. Another long time business I've use with no issues over the years.

Freshbooks – cloud based accounting software that my wife uses to run her at home consulting business.

For more information on tools and software I recommend, please read this article on Home Office Setup On a Budget.
